SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9x19mm. S# 6884u. Bbl. 3 15/16". P.08 police Luger semi-automatic fashioned from a 1920 Commercial Luger mfg. by DWM. The top of the bbl. extension is blank, with a Crown/N commercial nitro proof marked on the left (repeated on underside of bbl. and left side of breechblock). Toggle is marked with the intertwined "DWM" monogram logo. Front grip strap is unit marked "H. P. 455.", indicating issue to the Hessiche Polizei (State Police, Hesse) which is repeated on the right side of the bbl. extension, as well as on the mag. spine. While unusual, research indicates that these additional unit markings were standard on Hesse police P.08s, along with the removal of the stock lug, which has also been removed on this example. Metal components exhibit an apparent police arsenal reapplied blue finish, with some small parts, including the takedown lever, trigger, mag. release button, safety lever, and ejector exhibiting a straw finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Standard dovetailed blade front sight and fixed V-notch rear sight. Bbl. extension is fitted with a Schiwy trigger bar safety. All serialized parts are matching in both the commercial (from the pistols original production as a 1920 Commercial) and military/police (police armorer) styles and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, bbl. bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, extractor, firing pin (armorer renumbered), toggles, as well as the rear toggle pin. Grips and hold-open latch are unserialized and unproofed. MAGS: 1 matching 8-rd. mag. with aforementioned matching unit marking on spine and aluminum plug marked "S/42/ 6884/ 2" above an Eagle/154 proof. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their police arsenal reapplied blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that are fading to gray patina, some scattered handling marks, as well as consistent light pitting overall. Grip straps exhibit large areas of wear fading to gray patina. Strawed parts are good, showing areas of wear fading to gray and exhibiting scattered spots of age related discoloration. Bore is relatively bright, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining good, albeit worn rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show consistent mild smoothing overall, as well as a couple of superficial handling marks and minor impressions, with the left panel exhibiting a chip in the usual area, at and to the right of the safety lever. Chipped section of grip remains present. (25-6078/MLW). CURIO. $1,200-1,800.
