Cal. 62. NSN. Bbl. 9 5/8". Pair of ornate Chieftain flintlock pistols, likely produced in France for the Middle Eastern market. The lock and bbls. feature gilt gold foliate and floral embellishments. Bbls. feature a faceted breech section, which transition at a single band to a rnd. contour. Each bbl. is retained via a stamped metal band that is embellished with a panoply of arms. 1-piece stocks feature near full coverage foliate wire inserts, which include engraved floral motifs. Brass furniture consists of pierced foliate scroll sideplates, pommel caps, trigger guards (with ornate finials), as well as the ramrod ferrules and pipes. CONDITION: iron has faded to a dark patina, exhibiting consistent oxidation overall. Gold gilt embellishments remain largely intact, with areas of wear and flaking. Brass furniture is very good, with some age related discoloration. Both pistols function appropriately, save for x1 pistol, which does not hold at half-cock. Stocks show scattered handling marks, some chipping, some small losses to their wire inlays, with some small cracks present along the edges of the bbl. channels. (01-28839/MLW). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,500.
