Outstanding Finely Relief Engraved Pre-War German Drilling, #12628, 16 Gauge/unknown 8mm cal. (marked 172/28) likely 8x57JR, 8x58R Sauer, or something similar; 26.75" barrels, blue finish. Checkered walnut pistol grip stock and Schnabel forend with Deeley lever release, fluted horn grip cap, beaded cheekpiece, blank escutcheon plate and ribbed horn buttplate; providing a 12.75" LOP. The receiver displays ornate relief engraved game scenes with roe buck on the left side of the receiver and Elk on the right. Lock shows a boar on the left side and hares on the right. Other features include a steel tipped blade front sight, automatic rear sight that is activated by engaging the safety, causing it to rise to full height; with exposed hammers, and double triggers. Barrel address is blank, with clear markings indicating Krupp steel barrels, and marked "RAUCHLOS GEBRUFT" for nitro proofing. This drilling is in near excellent overall condition, retaining approx. 97%-98% rust blued finish, with light wear at the muzzles, and scattered handling marks. Stock is in fine condition with some light bruising and scratches consistent with age and field use. Action locks up securely with third bite fastener and appears tight on face. Smooth barrels display bright bores with a little fouling on the right side. Rifled barrel is bright with well-defined rifling. Although unmarked, the craftsmanship of this pre-war drilling is remarkable. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (C&R)
