RIFLE BY J.M. CASWELL. Cal. 32. Caswell manufactured firearms in the 1820-30's at his shop in Lansingburg, New York. At the time the maker was well known for their finely crafted firearms. This example is fit with a 35" octagon bbl with dovetailed post front sight and dovetailed tiny V notch rear sight. The lock and top flat of the bbl are both marked with the "JM CASWELL / LANSINGBURGH" makers stamp. The lock was converted to percussion and is decorated with an acanthus, sunburst, & scroll motif. It is stocked with a slender walnut stock with shallow comb and wrap around point pattern checkering. It has a lovely pierced 2-piece patchbox with the release located on the toeline plate. The cheek rest is decorated with a seven point silver inlaid star. The stock is attached to the bbl with 3 keys that are inserted within silver escutcheons. CONDITION: Overall very good. The metal has a nice even grey patina. The brass has a even mellow patina. The stock is very fine with some scattered handling marks. (01-28820/ZAL) ANTIQUE $1000-1500
