BOWIE KNIFE. This knife is pictured on page 234, "Accoutrements IV" by James Johnston. 20" overall, 14" meaty .3" thick clip point blade agent marked "M.L. BRADFORD & CO. BOSTON", Bradford had high end Boston sporting & gentleman's shop established in 1842. All Bradford marked knives were made by Frederick Hassam. Hassam was a true artist making his unique designed bowies each fitted with a crown stag handle carved & polished to perfectly fit a hand. His son too was an American artist of international renown Frederick Childe Hassam. Bowie, circa 1860 is accompanied with well fit leather sheath with brass throat. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of listing from 2006 James Julia auction, copy of page from Accoutrements IV where knife is featured. CONDITION: very good overall, blade has old sharpening marks, few small nicks in cutting edge, 4" oval iron guard has dark iron patina, sheath missing tip, throat has dark uncleaned brass patina, leather sound retaining most original polish with craquelure. Stag has hand worn patina, pinned silver pommel cap scratched with mottled patina. PROVENANCE: James Julia Auctions, lot 424, Oct. 9, 2006; James R. Johnston collection. (02-27259/JS).
