PERCUSSION REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 143750. Mfg. 1863. Springfield Research has range matches of serial numbers of large blocks of 1860 Armies going to the 20th New York Volunteer Cavalry in the Civil War. The 20th New York Cavalry Regiment is a particularly interesting unit for Colt collectors because it was raised relatively late in the war (1863) and served extensively in Virginia, West Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley. It was often called the "United States Vanguard Cavalry." The regiment spent much of its service on scouting, anti-guerrilla operations, and protection of railroads and supply lines. This example is fitted with an 8" bbl having a 1-line New York address and "D" inspector proofs on each side of the bbl lug. It has a 6-shot rebated cylinder with naval engagement scene & "D" inspector proofs. The 3-screw frame is marked with the standard "COLTS/PATENT" stamping and has notched recoil shields for stocks and cap slot. The brass trigger guard strap is inspector marked with a "H" proof behind the trigger guard. The iron back strap is notched for a stock and has an "H" inspector proof. Original Colt 1-piece grips with matching "3570" penciled into the backstrap channel and partially visible inspector cartouche ring on the right side of the grip. Matching numbered bbl, arbor, cylinder, straps, and grips. Wedge is a replacement with SN "2586". Loading lever is an unmarked replacement. CONDITION: overall good. The bbl has been cleaned to a silvery grey patina with some wear to the legible bbl address. Frame has about 20% fading case colors with mottled oxidation and a darker patina. Back strap has some small amounts of original blue in the sheltered lower traffic areas only and the balance having a fairly even dark patina. The grips are hand worn with some chipping in the corners, moderate handling marks and 3 relatively fresh notches in the butt. Bore has decent gain twist rifling with pitting. (01-29101/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
