1879 BOLT ACTION CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. S# 6553. Mfg. 1880. Martially marked Winchester-Hotchkiss were assembled at the Springfield Armory utilizing Winchester components, Springfield barrels & stocks. This example is fitted with a 24" bbl with a riser block mounted pinned blade front sight and military windguage rear sight. The bbl is proofed with "U.S.' perpendicular to the "V/P/Eagle" Springfield proofing. The receiver is marked with the 3-line address & HN sub inspection stamping. The HN proof is also found on the bolt. The 1-piece stock has the distinctive hinged forend tip with compartment, saddle ring. the boxed "SWP/1881" inspector proof is found on the left side of the butt near the buttplate, & the serif P final inspection proof. CONDITION: Overall good. The metal finish has faded with the balance having an even brown patina. The stock has a crack on the right side at the frame with some edge chips and scattered handling marks. The nosecap retains 90% of its lightly flaking finish. The cleaning rod remains in the forend. Bore is frosted with decent rifling and patches of pitting. (01-29496/ZAL) ANTIQUE $1500-2000
