Late Colt Model 1883 Grade 1 Double Barrel Hammerless Shotgun with Two Pairs of Barrels, #7939. Both pairs of barrels are fitted and numbered to the receiver. Barrels are near 100% fine Damascus twist, with solid concave milled ribs and 2-5/8" chambers. The longer barrel is 30-3/8" in length and choked IM/IM; shorter barrel is 28-1/8" in length and choked IC/MOD. Action lockup is via double underlugs and dolls head extension. Features include double triggers, automatic safety, and simple extractors. Case hardened frame and forend irons retain 70%-80% color, with light scroll and border engraving; trigger guard and opening lever are blued. Both splinter forends and the flat pistol grip buttstock are of oil-finished "B" grade European walnut. Both splinter forends have Schnabel tips, ebony inserts, and the buttstock has no grip cap, a blank metal insert, and an original black rampant Colt buttplate. Grips on all three pieces have extensive hand checkering at 20 LPI. Stock dimensions are 13-1/2" x 1-7/8" x 3-1/8". Mfgd 1895 by Colt. The gun comes complete with a fitted green canvas hard case, and includes additional supporting data for the Model 1883, including an authentication letter from the office of the Colt historian. Condition of the gun is very good, all original with 70%-80% case colors still on the receiver, light handling marks to the wood, and nominal wear to the action, which closes tight and functions correctly. Right hand short barrel has some wear where a caustic material has touched the Damascus barrel; all four bores are mirror bright. Gun has thick, strong barrels, which are capable of shooting light loads, but has not been fired lately and should be cleaned and timed by a competent gunsmith. This gun is 130 years old but retains its original condition. From the award-winning Mike Lawler Colt shotgun collection. Est.: $2,500-$4,500. (Antique)
