This fine leather hat is of a style that was a common sight in the engine rooms of ships during the Civil War years. Leather hats were preferred below decks and in other industrial venues for protection and because cloth caps did not hold up to the rigors of the engine room. The crown of the hat is 3" tall and about 6 3/4" dia. The brim extends out 3" from the crown at the center. The visor is sewn as is the crown and a rear seam. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a copy of a catalog page from Dale Anderson showing the hat. CONDITION: surfaces show some flexing and minimal flaking. Seams remain strong. This hat was acquired many years ago from a dealer named Dale Anderson. (02-27189/BF). NON-GUN. $500-800.
