POSTER. This large framed poster is painted on canvas with vibrant colors advertising the superb quality Purdy double barrel hunting rifles. Poster features a crossed pair of fine sidelock double rifles and has a duplex scene showing two hunters confronting a huge cape buffalo while below a single hunter is dealing with two charging trophy African lions. The poster is lettered: "JAMES PURDY & SONS, LTD. / GUN AND RIFLE MAKERS FOUNDED IN 1814 / AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON, ENGLAND". The poster is lettered on the bottom: "SPORTING GUNS AND RIFLES TO MEET ALL / SHOOTING REQUIREMENTS IN ANY PART OF THE WORLD". The octogenarian consignor of this lot was involved in African safaris from the middle part of the 20th century. Starting in Beina, Mozambique later Botswana. He was involved with Vira Safaris later lived in Zimbabwe and finally President of United African Safaris in U.A.S. Guine-Bissau and U.A.S. Mozambique. His ancestors came from South Coastal England and Ireland and were successful sing, truck and railway artist. This type of artist produced quality billboard signage from the 1870's to 1945. These large artistic billboard signs were painted of course only during the 6 fair weather months. The remaining months were spent painting decorative and commercial signage such as this example. While he was involved in the safari business, he acquired signs such as this one as a decoration for various African lodges. MEASUREMENTS: poster measures approximately 55" wide and 43" high. CONDITION: colorful poster is fully legible. Light scattered handling wear, but remains in very good condition. (02-27139/RW). NON-GUN. $6,000-8,000.
