RIFLE. Cal. 50. Joe Rundell of Flint, MI crafted this attractively embellished contemporary custom flintlock. The FEGA Master Engraver fitted this example with a 44" browned octagon bbl with dovetailed brass blade front sight & dovetailed square notch rear sight with a small patch of engraved matting behind the sight. The bbl is signed by "RUNDELL" on the top flat and stamped "W.M. LARGE" on the flanking left flat and terminates at a border line engraved duck foot tang. The "JR" signed flint lock & cock is scroll, border and geometric line engraved with a straight pierced trigger. The tiger striped relief carved stock is embellished with fine foliate scroll branching from the raised cheek rest, bbl tang and comb. There is a "RJ" inscribed silver thumb plate on the wrist & pewter federal eagle engraved medallion in the cheek rest. The lock sits on a raised platform that terminates with a tear drop finial having a borderline engraved pewter heart medallion in the center. The pierced scroll pattern patchbox is engraved with an intertwined foliate scroll with dash shading and fine border line design. The push button patchbox cover release is on a brass toeline plate with wavy borderline engraving extending 4 3/8" from the toe. The buttplate has a faceted tang with triangular and border line engraving. The faceted trigger guard is decorated with starburst accents and line border engraving. CONDITION: Overall very fine. The extraordinary engraving quality is further emphasized with the pleasing mustard tones of the patinaed brass furniture and browned finish of the bbl. The stock has a few scattered light handling marks and there is some minor freckling on the bbl. PROVENANCE: From the Private Collection of FEGA Master Engraver Joe Rundell.
