J.P. Moore of Troy New York 54 Cal Percussion Cap Bench Rifle circa 1840.

This is a 54 cal bench rifle by JP Moore of Troy New York circa 1840.

John P. Moore (J.P. Moore) was a renowned gunsmith, hardware dealer, and firearms supplier located
at 302 Broadway, New York City from roughly 1823 to 1846. He manufactured locks, percussion
pistols, and target rifles, but more importantly, he was a massive wholesaler who sold lockplates,
barrels, and gunsmithing hardware to regional makers all over the state.

The barrel is 34 inches long and is 1/2 Hex and 1/2 Round. Very heavy barrel with the bore having deep
rifling with some surface rust but very shootable. Has the original iron sights in place.
The one peice stock is sound. Shows evidence of some wood loss on right side just ahead of Lock.

Gun has a Set Trigger system. Back trigger needs to be set then hammer pulled back.
Hammer does drop when front trigger is pulled. Nothing happens when rear trigger is pulled.

All metal surfaces show heavy patina and some pitting around firing area. Nipple seems to be new.

We have not tested this rifle.
