SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 54. S# 9938. Over 14,000 of the 1st & 2nd model carbines were mfg. They were issued to numerous Union Cavalry regm'ts including the NY 1st, 5th, & 18th, as well as NJ, IN, WI, KY, & DE regm'ts. This example is fitted with 22" bbl with iron blade front sight 3-position leaf adj rear sight. The breech lever is marked with "J.H. MERRILL. BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858" patent marking, matchin SN, and has a button type latch release which is typically found on the 2nd model variations. The lock is marked "J.H. MERRILL. BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858 / APL. 9 MAY21-28-61" and the SN behind the hammer. It has a brass furniture including the bbl band. The stock has a mostly legible inspectors cartouche under the saddle ring bar. CONDITION: overall good. Metal has a mottled greyish/brown patina with some pitting in the bolster/hammer area. Brass has a nice even mustard patina with some dings. Stock is sound with hand wear and some dings. Bore is shiny with sharp rifling and spots of moderate pitting. (01-29051/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
