J.E. Harder Marked Full-Stock Pennsylvania Black Powder Percussion Muzzle Loading Rifle, #NVSN, .36 cal., 39" octagon barrel, metal with dark patina, faux tiger striped maple full-length stock with brass hardware, dovetailed German silver blade front sight, fixed "U"-notch rear sights, double set triggers in exaggerated brass trigger guard with finger rest, and full-length wooden ramrod. Barrel is marked "J E HARDER" on the top flat near the breech. Rifle is in very good overall condition, with the metal surfaces having a dark patina, showing intermittent light to moderate pitting along the length of the barrel. Side plate was likely color case hardened with crude "J" shaped scratches and simple light engraving to the hammer. There is corrosion and pitting around the nipple and barrel, due to firing and powder exposure. Stock is near fine with faux tiger striping, fading in areas. Brass hardware displays a pleasing patina, including the lightly engraved patch box with stylized finial. Stock has numerous indentations, scratches, and wood loss around the nipple from firing and exposure. Action and double set triggers function. Bore is dark. Jacob E. Harder was a noted gunsmith in the Clearfield/Lock Haven, PA area beginning in 1846, after a six year apprenticeship with the Bartlett Bros in New York. J.E. Harden & Son were still building rifles into the 1890s. Est.: $700-$900. (Antique)
