FACTORY 32" BARREL. Cal. 44 HRF. S# 133499. Accompanying Cody Firearms Records Check appears to list this rifle as originally manufactured in carbine configuration and shipped January 1877. Secondary date appears first on letter (April 19, 1899) with annotation as a rifle with 32" octagon barrel. It is unclear as to whether or not subject rifle was one of the many 1866s originally built with carbine receiver, but made into rifle configuration or if the repair and return order from 1899 was the change to rifle configuration with 32" barrel installed at that time. Either way this 1866 has an extremely rare factory original 32" "KING'S IMPROVEMENT" barrel. In William L. Porter's "Survey of available Winchester Model 1866 Records" he had evaluated only 50 examples of 28" barreled guns. The special order 32" factory 1866 barrel is undoubtedly "Hen's teeth" rare. Sporting front sight & folding leaf rear sight. Two band fastened full length mag. Front dove tail measures 3 ¾" center from muzzle. Brass action has plugs in staple holes for saddle ring. Walnut rifle forearm & straight grip stock w/ crescent steel trapdoor buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter from the Cody Firearms Records Office detailing the rifle's unusual history & features. CONDITION: bbl. retains 75% lightly faded blue with high edge wear and areas of cleaned oxidation. Mag. tube is faded to brown. Brass action shows a pleasing mild patina with scattered light dings and scratches. Stock shows light wear w/ scattered marks having a small crack extending from the buttplate. Forend shows small crack on right side rear with two additional small cracks near center right side. Mechanically fine. Dark lightly pitted bore retains largely intact rifling. (01-26394/BH). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
