MODEL 70 BOLT ACTION CARBINE IN 30 W.C.F. Cal.30 W.C.F. S# 12551. Manufactured in 1938 with 20" carbine length barrel with integral heavily stippled ramp front sight and proper Lyman 31 W bead. Rear sight is typical standard Winchester 22G having 3C step elevator. Left side of bbl stamped " -WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-MODEL 70-WINCHESTER TRADEMARK-30 W.C.F.". Left side of receiver and bbl have "W P Proof marks". Bottom of bbl stamped "30.30 36". Type 1 carbona blued "Cloverleaf tang" receiver with matted front and rear bridges. Left side of receiver stamped with first type Winchester trademark. Tang cocking groove bears the letter "J", typically found in serial number range 10,000-20,000. #5 magazine box with 1 partial crimp on each side. Short type magazine spring measures 2 1/8" long at attachment to follower. Follower is short pattern Winchester part #10270. Bolt is Serial numbered to match. Standard extractor stamped "A" at the bottom. American black walnut buttstock with 20 line per inch checkering, has early dark appearing finish with checkered steel buttplate. Inside of stock stamped "B". Early 1 1/4" sling swivels. The 30 W.C.F. chambering is not a catalog caliber and would be considered special order. " THE RIFLEMAN'S RIFLE" By Roger C. Rule page 264 and 265 lists the 30 W.C.F. cartridge as one of the confirmed non-standard chamberings with photo of a 30 W.C.F. chambered rifle. It is likely, being only 3rd year of manufacturer, that this special order Model 70 would have been built utilizing a left over Model 54 barrel. CONDITION: very good overall, blued metal parts retain 95% original finish with light muzzle wear and a few minor handling marks. Stock is in very good condition with only light wear to diamonds and few scattered light impressions. Bore is shiny with strong rifling. A Model 70 in 30 W.C.F. would be a highlight for any advanced Winchester collection, combined with the fact that this is one of the seldom produced carbine variations this model 70 is certainly deserving of a closer look.
