This 59" Lantaka with about 1.5" bore is solid bronze and among the most ornate relief cast decorated lantaka extant. Mounted on its original heavy cast figural bronze yoke and relief carved wooden stand, along with wood handle attached in cast 8" tiller, a more impressive complete example you will not find. Much more ornate than usual, high relief arabesques, large dolphin handles, flared muzzle with dolphin front sight. Beautifully relief carved polychrome 8" diameter wood stand with reinforced iron band at top, on 21" x 30" carved and polychrome edged base with chains attached over tiller and base mount. Lantakas have been made in Mindanao for almost 300 years, many have been brought back by GI's as souvenirs from the Spanish American War through World War II. Though these cannons were sometimes used as weapons; for the most part they were used as a sign of wealth & prestiege. In the 19th century, it was not uncommon for a wealthy family to display many of these bronze relics around their home. CONDITION: bronze is very good overall, wood base & stand are sound but have some insect damage. (01-29214/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
