PRICE, 12th WISCONSIN, "KIA MARCH TO THE SEA". Beautifully appointed Clauberg made staff sword, raised relief patriotic themed scabbard mounts, elaborately chased pommel with face engraved with stars and Columbian shield, shark skin grip, nicely etched 32" slightly curved blade. Top mount is engraved "Presented to / Capt. J. M. Price / by the members of / Co. D 12th Wis. V. I. /May 6, 1862". This sword is featured on pages 88-89 of Bezdek's "SWORDS of the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR". John Martin Price (18xx-1864) entered service Oct 18, 1861 in the hard fought 12th Wisconsin, advancing through ranks and was captain when sword presented May 6, 1862, wounded July 21, 1864 at Battle of Leggett's Hill, Atlanta, GA, recovered, promoted to major weeks before his death Dec. 20, 1864 in Savannah, GA from gunshot wound previous day. Price is buried in the Marietta National Cemetery. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small research file on regiment & John M Price, copies of pages from text published, copy of CDV of price wearing sword. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is gray with good discernible etched panels, hilt & scabbard mounts retain strong gold wash especially in protected areas, complete sharkskin & wire wrapped grip, black dyed leather scabbard body is scuffed and slightly shrunk.
