LUGER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 5534. Bbl. 5 15/16". P.04 Navy Luger semi-automatic pistol mfg. by DWM under contract for the Imperial German Navy in 1914. The top of the bbl. extension is marked with the 4-digit year of mfg. "1916", with an Imperial Navy crown proof (repeated on left side of bbl.) followed by 2 Crown/M proofs marked on the left. Left side of frame and front sight base are marked "1916". Metal components exhibit a rust blue finish overall, with some small parts including the takedown lever, trigger, mag. release button, safety lever, and ejector, exhibiting a straw finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Dovetailed blade front sight with Navy V-notch rear sight graduated 100-200. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, hold-open latch, bbl., bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, as well as the toggles. Firing pin and grips are unnumbered. MAGS: x1 plated 8-rd. with unnumbered Crown/M proofed concentric circle wood plug. CONDITION: excellent, with metal components retaining bountiful amounts of their period factory blue finish, exhibiting some light wear and thinning (most notably on edges), with some scattered spots of light surface oxidation present on the rear grip strap. Bbl. extension exhibits touch up bluing at and around the "1916" chamber date. Strawed parts are very good, exhibiting some spots of age related discoloration. Safety lever has possible been reheated at one time. Mirror bore, exhibiting scattered spots of light pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show some light smoothing, but otherwise remain sound and present nicely. A very attractive "1916" dated DWM P.04 Navy Luger. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of John Eckert. (26-1146/MLW).
