This antique inkwell is a large piece, with an eagle perched on an extended base, with four "feet." On the bottom of the base, the name George Armstrong Custer is written in pencil and dated 1874. The name and date is believed to have been placed there by Elisabeth Bacon Custer when she gave it to her husband George before he left for the Black Hills Expedition. This inkwell was kept in a case purchased from M.C. Lilley & Company, a military and society goods company. George Custer had a travelling desk, on which this inkwell would have set. This travelling desk, along with many of Elisabeth Custer's letters, is maintained in a private collection.
