Cal. 44. S# 17761. This revolver & stock are in standard configuration with a blued and color case-hardened finish, 7.5-inch octagonal-to-round barrel, German silver blade front sight, one-line New York address, and a three-position folding rear sight inset over part of the address. The frame is stamped "COLT'S PATENT" and "U.S." and is fitted for shoulder stock S# 17763/17764. Brass trigger guard and iron backstrap frame hold walnut grip with U.S. inspector cartouches. The original shoulder stock, which is rarely encountered, also bears inspector cartouches. The cylinder is engraved with the Ormsby Dragoon–Indian fight scene. This attractive and rare set was originally issued to the 2nd U.S. Dragoons at Fort Kearney in 1859, as one of 462 pairs of dragoons supplied with shoulder stocks. One stock was issued for pair of revolvers, and this stock was originally paired with the preceding pair. These stocked revolvers saw hard service, and only few documented survivors are known today. Examples with their original shoulder stocks are especially scarce. The set also has a notable provenance, having been part of the U.S. Military Academy collection and traceable in published reference in 1939. There were a total of 1012 dragoons and 506 stocks purchased from Colt, few chances to find that missing piece to a Colt collection may come any time soon.CONDITION: Overall good example. The gun finish has long faded to a mottled grey patina with crisp markings and some denting scattered throughout. The stocks are hand worn with added varnish that is flaking on the higher traffic areas and high edges. Bore has deep gain twist rifling with pitting. Stock is very good with discernible cartouches, refinished yoke crack repair. (01-29237/JS). ANTIQUE. $14,000-18,000.
