PISTOL IN DISPLAY CASE WITH AMMO. Cal. 49. (12.5mm). S# NSN. Bbl. 6.5". The GyroJet Rocket Pistol was a futuristic handgun design that started in 1963. It wasn't just named after something futuristic, but was actually designed to fire actual rocket projectiles. Originally manufactured in .49 caliber, less than 50 of the Model 137 were made before changing the caliber to 51 caliber and changing the model designation. Since it was an actual rocket powered projectile rather than standard gunpowder, there was no need for a standard chamber or mechanism to hold high pressure. The barrel is actually an oversized escape route for the rocket, w/ several vents on each side to bleed excess gasses. Since there is no chamber in a traditional sense, each round sits atop of the internal magazine prior to firing. When the trigger is pressed, the forward mounted hammer releases rearward, forcing the projectile into a firing pin. The hammer is cocked again as the rocket moves forward. This example has no serial number, being manufactured prior to 1964 and boasts a factory gold finish over the Zamac, zinc based frame. It is accompanied by a hardwood case w/ black felt interior and a circular .49 cal. ammo display cylinder fitted w/ a large (2.74" diameter) Robert Hutchings Goddard (Pioneer of rocket propulsion) commemorative coin. Front sight is a fixed blade, w/ a coinciding integral rear sight. Left side of frame marked: "MBASSOCIATES / SAN RAMON CALIF." below the barrel. The safety is marked ""ON / OFF" at rear. Right side marked: PAT. APPLIED FOR / MODEL 137 CAL .49" below barrel. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: display case, commemorative coin, 9 rounds of assorted 13mm (.51) & (12.4mm) 49 ammo, Book: "MBA GYROJETS AND OTHER ORDNANCE" by Mel Carpenter & single page marketing literature of early articles & announcements. CONDITION: gold finish remains quite complete w/ some thinning, primarily around rear vents & some high spots w/ some light scratching on sides. (26-1730/JZ). CURIO & AMMO. $3,000-5,000.
