PISTOL. Cal. 42. NSN. 4" bbl. This exceptionally interesting and appealing weapon has an overall length of 28 1/2" and a blade length of 22 1/2". The blade features geometric engraving extending 4" from the hilt with etched stags on both sides. It has a brass hilt with a down-turned scallop shell guard that also protects the mechanism for the flintlock pistol. The 4" brass cannon shaped bbl is marked "PENTERMAN WORMS". Other than the bbl, the entire mechanism is steel including the cock, pan and springs. The hilt of the sword has a simple round crossguard with a slightly embellished knuckle bow with an added escutcheon in the center. The pommel is also minimally decorated with a raised capstan. The grip appears to be fruitwood with brass pins and embellishments throughout. It is interesting to note that innumerable years of use have worn the brass embellishments as well as the wood grip smooth. No scabbard. CONDITION: The blade has a light gray cleaned patina. The pistol also has had some cleaning to the exposed steel parts. The brass bbl, as well as the sword hilt have been cleaned but thankfully have reacquired a mellow brass patina. Grip has honest wear, but no detracting damage. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27484/BF). ANTIQUE. $1,800-2,400.
