PHOTOS. Accompanied by family affidavit stating this sword was property of General & later Massachusetts Governor Nathaniel Banks. This sword sold at Willis Henry Auction, Boston in 2018/2019 along with other Bank's sword and other family items. The presentation sword missing pommel sold for over $50,000 and Lincoln signed commission for $20,000. Provenance is very good. Standard configuration of Ames 1860 staff sword, 31.5" diamond shaped blade with patriotic etch, pressed horn grip, eagle and panoply of arms decorated guard, folding languet, brass mounted steel scabbard. Accompanying sword is circa 1880 cabinet photograph of Banks in uniform wearing the presentation sword that was sold in same sale. Also accompanying is 16' tall framed oval engraving of Banks dated 1856. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: affidavit signed by Bank's family member, 2018, auction tag from Willis Henry Auction. CONDITION: sword is very good overall, retains much of its original gold plate on hilt and raised relief scabbard mounts, blade has some luster, overall gray & stained with long etched patriotic panels visible. Framed engraving is water stained, cabinet card has good detail with scuffed corners. (02-26088/JS). NON-GUN. $800-1,200.
