COSTA MESA SELECT-FIRE RIFLE IN EXCELENT CONDITION. Cal. 5.56mm. S# 010. Bbl. length 18". Bbl.18". A very scarce example of the rare Costa Mesa Armalite AR-18 select fire rifle, and an extremely low serial numbered gun. (See Small Arms Review article "The Lost ArmaLites" V1N10 - July 1998 for other similarly low numbered examples). This is the lowest serial numbered AR-18 this cataloger has ever seen in commerce. The original ArmaLite AR-18 was designed in 1963 in CA. as a potential alternative for the U.S. military. When it started to look as though it would not be adopted as a standard service rifle, production was licensed to Howa Machinery Co. in Japan. In 1974 ArmaLite & Sterling Ltd. in England signed a production agreement to manufacture both the AR-18 (Select-Fire version) & the AR-180 (the semi-automatic commercial version) & started manufacturing rifles in 1975. This particular example was mfg. by ArmaLite Inc. in Costa Mesa, CA. Light matte black finish. Serial number located on upper receiver. It is a gas operated piston driven semi auto rifle w/ a left side folding stock. Front sight is an elevation adjustable protected post. Rear sight is a windage adjustable dual aperture peep sight marked 100 & 300. The rifle is charged by a reciprocating handle on the right side of the rifle. Ambidextrous safety selector controls, black plastic furniture. Proper muzzle brake & correct bayonet lug w/ sling swivel. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: cardboard shipping box. MAGS: 2 aluminum 20 rd. w/ ArmaLite AR-18 floorplate. CONDITION: finish is complete on all exposed metal surfaces w/ lighter gray finish upper receiver & darker black finished lower receiver. Only a few light drag lines, primarily on the upper receiver, w/ the lower receiver remaining dark & complete in finish. Very few signs of prior use, if any. This is a VERY early gun & doesn't appear to have been used. Some remaining traces of cosmoline still exist in upper receiver. Stock locks tightly in open & closed positions. Shoulder stock has some light scratching on the left side that is visible under close inspection. Bore is bright w/ strong rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT MG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY RANSFERABLE.(03-2014/JZ). CURIO CLASS III. $25,000-35,000.
