SELECT FIRE RIFLE. Cal. 308. S# FA00248. Bbl. 22". This is an original military M14, not an M1A conversion as are much more common. The M14 was developed through a series of testing with an overly ambitious set of requirements. Its earliest roots can be traced to a post WWII study by the "Army Ground Forces Equipment Review Board" w/ the lofty goal of replacing the M1 Garand, the M1918A2 BAR & any currently used sniper rifles. Making things even more difficult, the requirement was even altered to include use that typically called for Carbine & SMG. After extensive testing & numerous design alterations/adaptations, the US Rifle, 7.62 mm, M14 was adopted on May 1st 1957. Shortly after the US Army Infantry Board issued requirements for this new Wonder Rifle to address three specific areas, including accuracy enhancement & reduction of recoil & muzzle climb. After several improvements & exhaustive amount of testing, in the end it was determined that this system was simply too light to be utilized as a suitable replacement for the BAR. This particular rifle is a an extremely rare Smith Enterprises M14 as supplied to the U.S. military. Smith was a small business supplier and they manufactured only 176 units for commercial sale. Barrel is terminated w/ unique Smith design multi-chambered muzzle brake as designed for the U.S. Coast Guard. Protected blade front sight. Rear sight is windage & elevation adj. protected peep. Attractive hardwood stock w/ flip up buttplate which reveals the trap door beneath it. Receiver markings on rear, behind sight include: "U.S. RIFLE / 7.62 – MM M14 / SMITH ENT". Above serial number. Selector is located on rear right of receiver. Safety in front of trigger guard. Sling swivels on bottom of hardwood stock, front & rear. Dark brown plastic handguard. NFA registry indicates "Western Ordnance International Corp" as manufacturer. MAGS: 1-20 rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Technical Manual TM9-1005-223-10, dated March 1972.
