COOLED HEAVY MACHINE GUN ON ANTI-AIRCRAFT MOUNT WITH ACCESSORIES. Cal. 50 BMG. S# 756402. Bbl. 45". A much less seen water-cooled version of the big "Ma Deuce" mounted on a heavy M63 mount. The Browning M2HB, affectionately referred to in military circles as "Ma Duece" is another evolution of the successful John Browning designed, recoil operated & belt fed guns that populated the battlefields following WWI. In an effort to build a gun that was comparable to the French 11mm Hotchkiss, w/ a primary purpose of defeating observation balloons & aircraft, the .50 BMG was designed and introduced for the M1921A1, which was quickly modified & reintroduced as the M2. Barrel heating issues would lead to the heavy barrel version that we now know as the M2HB. The water-cooled variant had a big jacket around the barrel, filled w/ water to assist in cooling. This example was manufactured by Colt. Hooded front sight (missing blade) w/ coinciding rear ladder sight adjustable to 2600 yards. 39" barrel water jacket measuring almost 4.75" in diameter. Spade grips w/ "butterfly" thumb trigger. Manufacturers markings on right sideplate clean & crisp. Right sideplate marked: "U.S. NO. 756402 GOVT. INSP. G.H.D. / BROWNING MACHINE GUN CAL. .50 M2 / MANUFACTURED BY COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN. U.S.A." above patent numbers. US Ordnance bombs stamped to right. Mounting system includes functional remote trigger mechanism. Left-side, mount for ammo can / drum. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 15"x14"x14" water can w/ internal pump, cooling hoses, unopened can of 110 rounds of linked M33 Ball ammo, Perfex Co. Telescopic Sight on leather case, 105 rd. ammo can & 2 cleaning rids, 1 still in original box, unassembled. CONDITION: Parkerized finish on exposed metal surfaces. Some small coin-size patches of thinning on top of water jacket. Scattered light patina. Hardwood spade grips & charging handle in very nice condition w/ period typical dents & impressions. Action operates quite smoothly. Tripod moves as intended, smooth & fluidly. OD green finish on all exposed tripod surfaces. Exposed brass portions retain a natural mustard finish. Hoses are soft & pliable, still retaining factory covers on fittings. Sight glass is clear w/ sharp reticle. Clean bore retains strong rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT MG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-2373/JZ). CURIO CLASS III. $85,000-120,000.
