50 BMG M2 MACHINE GUN. Cal. 50 BMG. S# 1302495. Bbl. 45". The Browning M2HB, affectionately referred to in military circles as "Ma Duece" is another evolution of the successful John Browning designed, recoil operated & belt fed guns that populated the battlefields following WWI. In an effort to build a gun that was comparable to the French 11mm Hotchkiss, w/ a primary purpose of defeating observation balloons & aircraft, the .50 BMG was designed and introduced for the M1921A1, which was quickly modified & reintroduced as the M2. Barrel heating issues would lead to the heavy barrel version that we now know as the M2HB. This example was manufactured by Buffalo Arms Corp. of Buffalo, N.Y. Light, even parkerized finish. Hooded front sight blade w/ coinciding rear ladder sight adjustable to 2600 meters. 10" ventilated barrel shroud. Spade grips w/ "butterfly" thumb trigger. Manufacturers markings on right sideplate clean & crisp. Right sideplate marked U.S.NO. 1302495 GVT INSP. / BROWNING MACHINE GUN CAL .50 M2 OP / MANUFACTURED BY / BUFFALO ARMS CORP. / BUFFALO N.Y." above patent numbers. NFA registry lists the model as "M-2OP", where apparently whoever registered it confused the inspector initials "OP" with the model number "M2". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter from consignor stating the following " I acquired this Buffalo Arms M2 several years ago. At the time I purchased it, it remained in its original aircraft configuration. This is an exceptionally uncommon configuration because Buffalo Arms manufactured M2 machine guns for aircraft applications only during World War II, and I have not been able to find another. In all my years of researching transferable Browning M2s, I have never personally encountered another Buffalo Arms transferable 50 offered for sale. Before I acquired the gun, it had reportedly been damaged in what was believed to have been an aircraft crash or similar incident. Wanting to preserve the registered firearm properly, I took it to Ohio Ordnance Works and met personally with Bob Landies, owner of the company and one of the foremost experts on Browning machine guns. Bob completely disassembled the firearm and carefully inspected the original registered Buffalo Arms right side plate. After confirming that the registered side plate was straight, structurally sound, and free of any issues, he used that original Buffalo Arms registered side plate to build a new, complete M2 Heavy Barrel configuration. This preserved the original registered machine gun while returning it to a reliable, fully functional condition. Included with the sale are both the complete, functioning, fully transferable Buffalo Arms M2 Heavy Barrel and the remaining original aircraft components from the firearm, including the original aircraft receiver components, barrel, barrel shroud, and internal parts. This gives the next owner not only a fully operational transferable Buffalo Arms M2, but also the original aircraft components that accompany its history. I believe this combination of original Buffalo Arms manufacture, documented restoration by Ohio Ordnance Works, retained original registered side plate, and inclusion of the original aircraft components makes this an especially desirable firearm for advanced Browning M2 collectors." 3 barrels, several spare internal parts. Also included is Display gun / parts kit. .50 BMG aircraft gun. Spade grips. No internal parts, right sideplate, barrel or rear trunnion. Long ventilated barrel shroud w/ slanted cone style flash hider. CONDITION: arsenal quality re-finish appears like new w/ very little sign of use beyond test firing. Packed in foam lined, fitted black transport case. Black plastic spade grips & charging handle in excellent condition. Most internal parts coated in a light oil. Bores are is bright w/ strong rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. Parts Kit: Used, military surplus. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT MG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-2067/JZ). CURIO CLASS III. $60,000-90,000.
