COLONEL EDWIN METCALF, 3RD RI HEAVY ARTILLERY. Edwin Metcalf (1823-1894) commissioned Major in 3rd RI HA, colonel Sept 15, 1862, postwar he was speaker of Rhode Island House of Representatives, attorney general of Rhode Island and commander of Rhode Island GAR. One sword by Ames Sword Company is finely gilt militia sword, tortoise shell handle, guards decorated with eagle & panoply of arms, 29" fine gold highlighted blade etch celebrates the centennial of end of Revolutionary War 1784-1884 with military motifs, scabbard has raised relief patriotic themed pierced mounts. The 2nd sword is masonic, Springfield Commandery of Knight's Templar, 28.5" gold highlighted inscribed blade. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of research and biographic material.
