BALL CARBINE. Cal. 50 rimfire. NSN. The Ball Carbine, designed & patented by Worcester mechanic Albert Ball in 1863. It is a well made breech loading saddle ring carbine utilizing the battlefield proven rimfire 56-50 Spencer cartridge. Standard configuration E.G. Lamson, Windsor, VT maker marked on left side of case colored steel frame, 20" barrel, unique forestock mounted 7-round tubular magazine with spring loaded compression rod to load from breech. Inspected by George G. Saunders, his cartouche or initials are found on most parts. 1000 Ball carbines were delivered mid 1865 after Lee's surrender. CONDITION: complete & original, possibly unfired, crisp action, bright shiny rifled bore, retaining dark muted case colors on frame with staining & light pitting. Barrel has smooth mottled plum patina. Stocks have crisp inspection marks, raised grain, one large dent near barrel band on forestock. (01-28747/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
