FLINTLOCK AMERICAN LONG RIFLE. Cal. 45. Circa early 1800's. This attractive Lancaster County flintlock is fit with an unsigned 42" heavy octagon bbl with punch dot muzzle embellishments, dovetailed brass blade front sight, fine tiny V notch rear sight, and is held in place with 4 brass bbl keys. A Joseph Golcher flint lock with sprays of scroll & line border engravings is nicely fit into the stock. The tiger striped maple stock is checkered at the wrist with a coarse cross-hatch pattern that transitions into a fine checkered triangular panel. The stock is incised with a branching scroll behind the cheek rest, wavy border line embellishments under the cheek rest, and a double line chasing along the bbl keys. A fine line accent engraved German silver starburst and heart plates are tacked on the cheek rest and the later behind the bbl tang. The patchbox is a scroll and simple line engraved pierced 4-piece made of brass with domed lid. The buttplate is of a flatter design with faceted upper tang with the patchbox cover release button located on the top flat. A simple entwined line, chip dot, and cloud embellished toe line plate runs 3 3/8" from the toe. Faceted brass trigger guard with finger spur tang. 3 faceted ram rod ferrules hold the simple hickory ram rod in place. CONDITION: Overall very fine. The bbl & lock have a mellow lightly mottled grey patina. The stock is very good with nicely figured tiger striping, an old long crack that runs on the left side near the rear bbl key, & a small crack emanating from the side plate. Other than a few other handling marks it has good clarity to the incisions on the stock and the engraving of the brass. (01-28830/ZAL) $8,000-12,000
