Cal. 58. S# 7522/6295. Cook & Brothers Manufactured over 7000 long arms during the Civil War. However, the survival rate is so low that a large quantity must have been destroyed near the end of the war. This is a typical late war carbine, almost identical to the example illustrated and described on pages 60-63 in Murphy and Madaus "Confederate Carbines & Musketoons" 2002, about 37" overall, 21" barrel stamped "COOK & BROTHER / ATHENS GA 1864" and numbered 6295. Lock is marked with Confederate First National flag rear of hammer, and "COOK & BROTHER ATHENS GA / 1864" and numbered 7522. Typical of late production is lack of captured ramrod and sling bar, mixed numbers, and use of Enfield hammer. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: detailed authentication and appraisal report Sept. 1, 2014; copy of canceled check from Berenson when obtained in 2007; copies of Cook chapter from Murphy & Madaus. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, all original & complete with exception of missing front sling swivel, superior to vast majority of survivors, gray iron patina, smooth brass patina. Damascus lines in barrel evident, crisp markings, very good wood, mechanics fine, crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Hayes Otoupalik collection. David Berenson Estate collection 2007.(01-29645/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-40,000.
