William Albaugh when describing this pattern in his early texts stated even though he did not know who made it: "it is as Confederate as corn pone & molasses". We now know this sword was most likely made early at the Confederate States Armory, owned by Louis Froelich, Wilmington, North Carolina. These are unique massive sabers, 34" unstopped fuller blade, unique smooth mushroom shaped pommel, elegant large 3-branch flat slotted guard terminating into large flat quillon. CONDITION: very good overall, iron patina, the thin leather grip veneer is long gone, well patinaed dark wood grip & original iron wire wrap. Brass hilt has smooth medium mustard patina and perfect shape; a vast majority of this pattern have cracked or broken branches. This is a beautiful survivor of a rare & desirable Confederate early war cavalry saber. (02-26606/JS). NON-GUN. $3,000-4,000.
