About 1.2" round brass ID tag "WAR OF 1861" & "UNITED STATES" around patriotic American eagle reverse stamped by sutler "J.H. HIGHLAND / Co. I 5TH REG. VT. VOL. GRANVILLE N.Y.". John H. Highland entered service 9-3-1861 in Company "I", 5th Vermont Infantry as 18 year old private, he was laborer in Granville, NY on Vermont state line when war began. The 5th was hard fought unit, he was shot in foot at Savage Station June 26, 1862 and while being treated, he was captured as Confederates overran field hospital the following day. He was paroled later in July and rejoined regiment, only to be discharged for disability February 23, 1863. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: binder of copied service records and unit history. CONDITION: fine overall. (02-26286/JS). NON-GUN. $700-900.
