Edwin Henry "Fish" Allison was born in Michigan and joined the 10th Ohio Cavalry, Company D. It is believed he got this Spencer during the Civil War. He married a Sioux woman and became a scout and interpreter for the U.S. Army. He was commissioned to get Sitting Bull to surrender, which he accomplished. Sitting Bull and Allison carved their names on this carbine as a promise to surrender.
