SIMSON "S" CODE "A" SUFFIX P.08 LUGER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9x19mm. S# 1167a. Bbl. 3 15/16". 1 of only approx. 1,000 "a" suffix P.08 Lugers mfg. by Simson & Co. The bbl. extension is appropriately blank over the top of the chamber, with a triad of Simson Eagle/6 inspector proofs, followed by an eagle firing proof marked on the right (eagle firing proof repeated on right side of bbl. and left side of breechblock. Various small parts and components exhibit Simson Eagle/6 proofing, with the frame exhibiting x2 on the front of the trigger guard bow, and (unusually) an additional Eagle/6 proof above and to the right of the S#, just below the bbl. extension rail cutout. Toggle is marked with Simson's "S" code. Metal components exhibit a rust blue finish overall, save for on some small parts, including the takedown lever, trigger, mag. release button, safety lever, and ejector, which are strawed. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Standard dovetailed blade front sight and fixed V-notch rear sight. Nearly all serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, hold-open latch, bbl., bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, extractor, firing pin, and toggles. Rear toggle pin appears to have been renumbered at one time to match, possibly during the period. Grips are non-matching imperially proofed replacements (S#: 545). MAGS: x1 matching blued steel 8-rd. with aluminum plug. Plug is marked "1167/ a" above an Eagle/6 proof. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their original arsenal blue finish, exhibiting patches and areas of wear and thinning that are fading to gray, some patches of light pitting, as well as some superficial handling marks overall. Grip straps have largely faded to gray patina. Strawed parts retain fair amounts of their original finish, showing wear fading to gray patina, with scattered spots of light pitting and age related discoloration. Bore is bright, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show mild smoothing and some superficial marks from handling and storage, with the right grip exhibiting a small chip at the bottom right corner of the panel. While any Simson P.08 Luger is desirable, of the approx. 12,000 total P.08s produced by Simson, only around 1,000 were mfg. with an "S" code toggle and "a" suffixed serial number, largely contributing to their desirability today. (26-1538/MLW). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
