CONTRACT FABRIQUE NATIONALE HIGH POWER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# ANC64-T71589. Bbl. 4 5/8". High Power semi-automatic pistol mfg. in Belgium by Fabrique Nationale under contract for the National Army of the Congo in 1964. While gaining independence from Belgium in 1960, the new government found itself unable to control any of the outlying provinces, subsequently leading to the purchase of additional armament for its military in 1964. The left side of the slide is marked "FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE HERSTAL-BELGIQUE/ BROWING'S PATENT DEPOSE". Right side of the frame and slide exhibit the S# (frame with the "ANC" prefix, reflecting "Armee Nationale Congolaise" followed by production year "64"), with Belgian commercial proofs marked on the right of the forward trigger guard web and on the right side of the bbl. For this contract, no crest was applied to the slide. Underside of frame is marked with a "Mach 1/ Knoxville TN/ FN HP/GP" import mark. Metal components exhibit a black enamel type finish overall, save for on the bbl., which is polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered black synthetic grips, with the left side of the frame featuring a lanyard ring. Slide features an external extractor, with a fixed half-moon blade front sight and dovetailed U-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching in the "stacked" fashion and include the frame, slide, and bbl. MAGS: 1 phosphate 13-rd. mag., with black enamel button type floorplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: page of notes from Charles Wagner, detailing the history of this variation. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their black enamel type finish, exhibiting some areas of wear and thinning (primarily on edges), with scattered superficial handling marks and some flaking present overall. Mirror bore, exhibiting some scattered spots of light pitting and a single small spot of dark pitting, while retaining sharp and well defined rifling throughout. Grips show some superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. An extremely rare chance for the advanced High Power collector to add a post-1960 National Army of the Congo contract pistol to their collection. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-392/MLW). CURIO. $4,500-6,000.
