PROPERTY" INSCRIBED POWDER HORN. This rare horn belongs to a group of horns collectively referred to as "Roxbury horns". They were produced in & around Roxbury, Massachusetts during the siege of Boston which took place April 19, 1775 to March 17, 1776. The siege is considered by many to be the opening phase of the Revolutionary War. This powder horn measures 14" and engraved in 3 lines "ROXBURY : JULEY : 25 : 1775 / PETER : INGERSOLL IUR : HIS : HORN / LIBERTEY : AND : PROPERTY : :". Carved motifs include a fort, a mermaid, a man shooting a rifle, a snake, and other folky interesting design. This horn has extraordinary provenance in that it was part of the American Antiquarian Society Collection in the 19th Century. Rufus Grider documented this horn and drew it in 1890 and it is published as one of the 157 Revolutionary War horns he documented circa 1890. This horn is pictured in "AMERICAN ENGRAVED POWDER HORNS" by Grancsay, 1945. "LIBERTY" is desirable inscription to be found on Revolutionary War inscribed objects and it really adds history to this impeccable and beautiful horn. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: detailed appraisal and provenance report written by the cataloger in 2020. Framed 21" x 17" facsimile of Grider's drawing, other research and Capt.
