EMBELLISHED FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 45. Joe Rundell was an accomplished artist, engraver and sculptor. Building impressive works of art in his Flint, MI home. The FEGA Master Engraver was featured on over 10 pages with in the "American Engravers: The 21st Century" by C. Roger Bleile and complimented in a 2002 Shooting Sportsman magazine as one of the top 6 firearm engravers in the world. In addition to his engraving accolades he also won numerous awards for his stock work. The talents of both his engraving and stock work were put on full display with this contemporary piece of art. Starting with the 42" browned bbl that begins with an inlaid silver band at the muzzle with a dovetailed brass beaded blade front sight. The octagon bbl is then filed into a hexadecagon (16 sided) extending 2" from the muzzle for a full 30" where it transitions just forward of the dovetailed V-notch rear sight with small engraved embellishments flanking each side. The artists signature "RUNDELL" is on the top flat with bracketing engraved accents. The breech end has a matching silver band with engraved borders extending along the tang. The "RUNDELL" signed lock is case colored with sunbursts extending from the pan and rear of the lock and fitted with double set triggers. The relief carved stripe grained stock features a foliate scroll pattern with relieved side plate panel, winged borders extending from the lock, tear drop finials, & a chased borderline that runs between and surrounding the 4 bbl keys. The all brass furniture is extensively engraved with a pierced foliate motif patchbox. The cover of the patchbox releases with a pushbutton located on the upper tang of the buttplate and features an engraved sleeping sun with cloud scroll. The buttplate is border engraved with a starburst surrounding the push button and a pierced brass scroll pattern plate extending from the tang along the comb with a silver inletted flare extending an additional inch beyond the pierced brass plate. The toeline of the stock has a full length brass plate with 6 pierced ovals surrounded with scroll border engraving that terminates with the brass trigger guard. The bow of the trigger guard is engraved with a federal eagle clutching a "LIBERTY" banner within his beak and trimmed with fine intertwined borders. The finely engraved foliate scroll pattern sideplate is nestled within a relieved panel. A vacant oval silver plaque rests on the cheek rest. The octagonal ramrod ferrules, bbl keys, and many of the screws are embellished with accent engravings that bring this work art to a different level. The brass is nicely aged with an even mustard yellow patina. CONDITION: Overall very fine well executed contemporary flintlock. PROVENANCE: From the Private Collection of FEGA Master Engraver Joe Rundell. (01-28802/ZAL) ANTIQUE $6,000-9,000
