NATIONALE HIGH POWER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH PROVENANCE. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 504/886. Bbl. 4 5/8". Possibly the only known High Power semi-automatic pistol mfg. by Fabrique Nationale under contract for the Syrian police. The left side of the slide is marked "FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE/ HERSTAL BELGIQUE/ BROWNING'S PATENT DEPOSE", with the Syrian coat of arms marked over the top, towards the rear sight, and with Arabic characters marked on the right, denoting police and security use. Left side of the frame, slide, and right side of the bbl. exhibit Belgian commercial proofs. Interestingly, the S# has been altered at one time on the frame, slide, and bbl. from its original number to "504/866", with Charles Wagner speculating that the "886" was applied as an internal numbering range. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bbl., which is polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips, with the right grip featuring red anti-moisture barrier paint on the interior of the panel. Thumbprint slide, with fixed half-moon blade front sight and dovetailed V-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching in the "stacked" fashion, and include the frame, slide, and bbl. MAGS: 1 blued 13-rd. mag., with blued button type floorplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: notes from Charles Wagner regarding this pistol. The notes list "This is the only known example." and as "Early Iraqi Contract", although the slide is marked with the Syrian coat of arms. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that show through to gray and brown patinas, with scattered superficial handling marks present overall. Front grip strap exhibits a large area of wear and thinning that shows through to gray patina, with the rear grip strap retaining a mostly brown patina overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips show smoothing, as well as scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. A seldom presented opportunity for the advanced High Power collector to add a Syrian police contract High Power to their collection. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-408/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
