NATIONALE HIGH POWER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 737. Bbl. 4 5/8. 1 of only 1,694 High Power semi-automatic pistols mfg. by Fabrique Nationale under contract for Nicaragua during the 1950s, as referenced on page 788 of "FN Browning Pistols, 3rd Edition", by Anthony Vanderlinden. The left side of the slide is marked "FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE/ HERSTAL BELGIQUE/ BROWNING'S PATENT DEPOSE", with "REPUBLICA DE NICARAGUA" and "AMERICA CENTRAL" forming a circle, surmounting the Nicaraguan crest on the top of the slide, towards the rear sight. Left side of the frame, slide, and right side of the bbl. exhibit Belgian commercial proofs. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bbl., which is polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece replacement checkered wood grips, which feature red anti-moisture barrier paint on the interior of the panels. Thumbprint slide features a fixed half-moon blade front sight, with a dovetailed V-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching in the "stacked" fashion, and include the frame, slide, and bbl. MAGS: 1 blued 13-rd., with button type floorplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: notes from Charles Wagner detailing this variation. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their blue finish, exhibiting wear and thinning that shows through to gray patina, scattered superficial handling marks, as well as areas of light to mild pitting overall. Left side of the frame exhibits several concentrated spots of mild to moderate pitting beneath the slide stop lever. Very bright bore, exhibiting consistent mild pitting towards the muzzle, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips show some light smoothing, as well as a few light superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. A rarely encountered example of a Nicaraguan contract FN High Power. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-436/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
