ORIGINAL, DUAL FEED FN MINIMI MACHINE GUN. PRE-86 DEALER SAMPLE (KEEPER). Cal.5.56 NATO. S# FN008958. Bbl. 20" over brake. A rare opportunity to own a functional piece of modern day U.S. Military hardware. The model name MINIMI derives from the French term "Mini Mitrailleuse", translated to Mini Machine Gun. This gas operated long-stroke piston system, firing from an open bolt, was first introduced in 1974. It was officially adopted by the United States Military in 1982 & designated the Model M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). It was intended to bridge the gap between the heavy Light Machine Guns, such as the M60 while providing the firepower that a standard rifle could not achieve. Featuring a quick change barrel, to help sustain those heavier periods of fire while utilizing a dual feed mechanism, capable of feeding not only linked ammunition belts but retaining the ability to feed from the same box magazines as the M16. Several variations have been designed & adopted since its original inception, including the MK. 46 Mod 0/1, the MK. 48 Mod 0/1 & the shorter, lighter M249 Para. This example is marked "FN HERSTAL / MINIMI 5.56" w/ serial number on the left side of the receiver. NFA Registry indicates manufacturer as "FN (HERSTAL)". Threaded barrel terminated w/ A2 style flash hider. Hooded post front sight. 6.5" ventilated barrel shroud between front sight & receiver. Folding, extendable bipod mounted forward of front handguard. Folding carry handle forward of top cover. 6.75" picatinny rail on top cover, forward of protected rear peep sight. Right side, non-reciprocating charging handle. Black plastic pistol grip. Fixed, black plastic shoulder stock w/ folding shoulder rest. CONDITION: finish is complete & consistent w/ only light thinning, particularly in areas of mechanical intervention. Feed tray finish is usually worn immediately from the friction of the belt, yet this one still retains full finish. Bore is bright w/ strong rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. PRE-86 DEALER SAMPLE (KEEPER).
