Cal. 70. NSN. 34" overall, 19.5" barrel, made from altering musket to short barrel and moving front band back. Stamped on lock and rarely seen is Mexican state markings "ESTADO DE GUANAJUTO". State & city of Guanajuto in central Mexico produced most of the gold in New Spain in colonial times and has been fought over since then. Guanajuto was the provisional capital of the country in 1858 as president Benito Juárez fought rebels. In 1863, the French took the city during the French Intervention in Mexico. CONDITION: fair to good overall, iron & brass patinas, wood has severe erosion at butt, will not hold on cock, dirty smooth bore. PROVENANCE: estate collection of Compton LaBauve, Jr. (01-28933/JS).
