RIOT CONVERSION PUMP ACTION SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 GA. S# C94893. Bbl. 20". Originally mfg. by Winchester as a standard configuration Model 1897, this example was subsequently factory converted into a riot configuration. Research suggests that in 1900 Winchester received a sizeable order of 1897 shotguns in the riot configuration, at which time many standard barrel length guns were factory shortened to 20" and modified with Cylinder chokes. This example, mfg. in 1900 as part of the "C Series" is marked with Winchester's 2-line mfg. and patent information across the top of the bbl., with"12" marked towards the breech. Left side of the bbl. is marked "FULL" above a hand stamped "CYL" choke marking, indicating previously noted factory conversion. Action slide is marked "WINCHESTER/ MODEL 1897". Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the trigger and hammer, which are case colored. Grooved wood 3-screw forearm with steel wire reinforcement in front groove and plain rnd. knob buttstock with plain steel buttplate. Buttstock has possibly been lightly sanded and refinished at one time. Aluminum bead front sight. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting a few areas of light to mild wear and thinning (primarily on the receiver), scattered superficial marks and scratches, as well scattered spots of light surface oxidation and pitting. Mirror bore, exhibiting some very light to light pitting. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with the 3-screw forearm exhibiting 3 cracks (left, right, underside) stemming from the front edge, and the aforementioned steel wire reinforcement repair. Buttstock exhibits 2 approx. 7/8" cracks on either side of the toe, with a small steel pin repair present between the two cracks on the toeline. An attractive and early example of a Winchester factory converted Model 1897 riot shotgun. (25-5319/MLW). CURIO. $1,500-2,250.
