RICHMOND, VA WITH POSSIBLE CONFEDERATE USE. This exceptional white/tan beaver felt top hat is of a form popular from about 1845-1860. The hat is approx. 13" dia with a 6" crown. It has a narrow tan grosgrain band and edge binding. The hat has been fitted with a heavy bullion hat cord and a 2" silver or silver plate palmetto tree dated "1775" indicating use by a South Carolina soldier. The interior of the hat has a nearly 3" sweatband with a painted cotton liner. The crown appears to be silk embossed in gold with an American eagle and shield and the name "John Suffrins". Suffrins was a well-known hatter from Richmond, VA and produced a plethora of hat styles at his shop in the Gilbert's Block of Richmond, VA. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of advertisements and supporting information for Suffrins' Richmond hat business. CONDITION: as expected, the hat is a bit dirty and does show the effects of insect abuse over the years. The sweatband has some separations but remains surprisingly complete. The lining is quite deteriorated but substantially present. The mark in the crown is easily read and remains quite crisp. (02-27196/BF). NON-GUN. $1,500-2,500.
