SERIAL NUMBER "4". Cal. 31. S# 4. This Smith & Wesson lever action pistol made in 1854 was the first Smith & Wesson branded firearm, and among the first produced based on one digit serial number. 1200 were made in total 1854-1855 based on Daniel Wesson's 1854 patent.Ironically, S&W sold their interest to Oliver Winchester in 1856 who continued making brass framed lever action pistols, the lever action Henry rifle in 1860, then 1866 Winchester and the rest is history. Smith & Wesson turned their attention to cartridge revolvers and today Smith & Wesson and Winchester are household names in firearms, all starting with Smith & Wesson patent in 1854. These rare pistols are historic & important to S&W and Winchester collectors alike. Standard configuration, 4" octagon to round barrel, stamped on 3 flats: "SMITH & WESSON / NORWICH, CT", "PATENT / FEB 14, 1854", and "CAST-STEEL", integral spring loaded tubular 6-shot magazine, engraved steel frame, varnished rosewood grips, fixed notch rear sight, post front sight. Made to shoot self-contained "rocket ball" cartridges with powder & primer contained in conical ball. CONDITION: good overall, original and matching SNs, no original finish, brown patina & pitted overall. Markings all all discernible but "SMITH & WESSON" was struck very lightly, grips well fit with traces of original varnish, mechanics functional, good rifled bore with pitting. (01-26635/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
