ACTION SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 GA. S# 21503. Bbl. 32". Model 1887 lever action shotgun mfg. by Winchester in 1888 (second year of production). Left side of the bbl. is marked with a "WP" within a oval proof. Left side of the receiver is marked with Winchester's intertwined WRA Co. monogram. Lower receiver tang is marked with Winchester's 2-line mfg. and patent information. Receiver, breechblock, hammer, lever, and buttplate exhibit a nickel plated finish, with the bbl. and mag. tube exhibiting a blue finish. 2-panel plain wood forearm with plain wood rnd. knob buttstock and checkered steel buttplate. Brass bead front sight. CONDITION: receiver, breechblock, and lever retain fair amounts of their original factory nickel plated finish, exhibiting areas of wear and flaking that show through to gray patina. Hammer retains good amounts of its nickel plated finish, with scattered spots of flaking. Buttplate has worn to a mostly gray patina. Bbl. and mag. tube retain traces of their original blue finish in protected areas, with the balance having faded to a gray patina and exhibiting scattered spots / patches of light surface oxidation, pitting, and age related discoloration. Bore exhibits consistent mild to moderate pitting. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows scattered marks, scratches, impressions and spots / areas of flaking to their varnish finish, but otherwise remain sound. Buttstock exhibits a small faint crack on the wrist, stemming from the upper receiver tang. To summarize "The Winchester Book" by George Madis, while plated finishes were available from Winchester for the Model 1887, they were seldom desired and/or ordered, making this a rare example of a nickel plated Model 1887 lever action shotgun. (25-5350/MLW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
