GERMAN SILVER PRESENTATION PLAQUE ID'D TO CAPT. M.R. MILLSAPS CO. B E. TENN VOL.2ND REGT. Cal. 36. S# 878. In late 1861 Capt. Millsaps enlisted and helped organize the 2nd Tenn. Inf. Regiment Co. B. He mustered in with a rank of Lt. and was promoted to Capt. Apr. 1862. He was briefly listed as AWOL erroneously when he was ordered away for the purposes of recruiting and capturing deserters due to a paperwork error. He was captured on Nov. 6th 1863 in Rogersville, IN. He was a prisoner of the confederate Libby Prison until he was released in Sept. 1864. This 1855 was one of the early examples that was produced by Colt with a non-fluted cylinder and in the smaller 36 cal. The 36 caliber rifles were never adopted by the military despite Colt"s attempt to gain interest. It was believed that the caliber was too small and unsuitable for service. Eventually, Colt received his first small contract of 1855s for just over 100 rifles in the larger 44 caliber. This example would have been a private purchase rifle that has the early attached lubricator on the left side alongside a full attached screw in cleaning rod. It is fitted with a 21" bbl that has a dovetailed German silver front sight. Rec groove mounted height adj rear sight. The top bbl flat has a legible 2-line early bbl address. The stock has flush inlaid German silver plate along the comb with the inscription "CAPt. M.R. MILLSAPS. / Co B. E. Tenn. VOL.T. / 2nd Reg.t". The straight grip walnut stock has smooth steel crescent buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 3 Ring binder with extensive photocopied research including muster records and unit history. CONDITION: Overall fair. The metal has a dark mottled patina with pitting. Bbl address is legible, however partially obscured with oxidation. Matching numbered cyl. Oiler and cleaning rod are period correct replacements. Stock has repaired breaks, chips and handling marks. German silver plaque is very fine with crisp markings. Bore is dark with sharp rifling and pitting. (01-29219/ZAL) ANTIQUE $4500-6000
