SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 7204. Bbl. 4". An extremely interesting P.08 Luger, assembled from a DWM Model 1914 Navy Luger frame, with Imperial era P.08 parts and components, pictured and detailed on page 222 of "History Writ in Steel", by L. Donald Maus. The bbl. extension is marked "1912" over the chamber, with DWM arsenal proofs marked on the right. Toggle is marked with the intertwined DWM monogram. Left side of the frame is marked "1917" (only found on Model 1914 Navy Lugers, circa. 1914-1918), with a Kiel Dockyard "W.K./ 17037" property mark present on the rear grip strap. Front grip strap exhibits a X'd out "P.C.405." police unit marking, followed by "U.68." police unit marking, with an X'd out "S.K.32." marking present around the edges of the butt. Maus speculates that the "P.C.405." unit marking is indicative of the city of Chemnitz, with the "U.68." unit marking possibly indicating transfer to the Meiben police school ("U" indicating "Ubung" or traning). Metal components exhibit an arsenal applied blue finish overall, save for on some small parts, which are strawed. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Bbl. extension is fitted with a police Schiwy sear safety. Dovetailed blade front sight, with fixed V-notch rear sight. Most numbers are matching (nearly all numbers having been either reapplied or stamped over a prior S# at the time of rework) and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety bar, bbl., bbl. extension, trigger bar, firing pin, toggles, rear toggle pin, as well as the grips. Safety lever, hold-open latch, and breechblock are mis-matched. MAGS: 1 8-rd. mag. with wood bottom marked "409/ PAL II/ 1190/ 2" (also documented as being with this pistol). CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their arsenal reapplied blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that show through to gray patina, with varying degrees of pitting (primarily present on the right side of the bbl. and bbl. extension) overall. Strawed parts retain fair amounts of their finish, exhibiting areas of wear that show through to gray patina, as well as scattered spots of age related discoloration. Dark bore, exhibiting consistent heavy pitting, while retaining fair to good rifling throughout. Grips show smoothing, as well as scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-457/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-2,000.
