RIFLE. Cal. 58. NSN. Per "American Gunsmiths" by Frank Sellers, David M. Varney was in Burlington, Vermont from 1842-1875. Round 29.5" barrel having Gain Twist rifling. Blade front sight, elevator rear sight. Extra barrel tang screw for sight base. Percussion lock marked "RIDDLE" in banner. Dbl. set triggers. Wedge fastened, half stock walnut stock w/ oversized hardwood ramrod, pewter nose cap. Brass furniture including crescent buttplate, toeplate, spear tip finial finger curl triggerguard, sideplate, lamb on cheekpiece. German silver plated thimble & wedge escutcheons. CONDITION: bbl has brown corroded appearance with pitting & wear streaks. Lock has pitted appearance with non-functioning hammer. Wood has worn appearance with large cracks, smoothened checkering, numerous dings & marks. Wedge is loose to cutout. Bore has outlines of rifling with pitting throughout.
